Mixed Media Work

My mixed media work incorporates embroidery into my painted images. When combined, the painted and embroidered elements each provide their own specific visual and conceptual language. I enjoy playing with the juxtaposition of the heavy, impasto brushwork against the delicacy of the silk and the careful, meticulous, attention to detail demanded by the Japanese embroidery techniques. Compositions for the paintings are generated from observation and then abstracted through the act of translation into paint. Finally, the embroidered response is a further level of breaking down the original source into an essential pattern or design.
